PEOPLE: Setting the Standard for Rental ― Going Global | Ryu Wanju | Woongjin Asia

WRMS (Woongjin Rental Management System) is a solution born from Woongjin's long history in the rental business. From the moment a customer signs a contract, rental operations generate large volumes of interconnected data spanning customers, assets, and logistics. How well a company manages that complexity determines its competitive edge.

Designed to manage the entire rental business lifecycle on a single platform, WRMS has established itself as the operational standard for major domestic rental companies. Now, it is extending that same foundation to the global stage. In this edition of Woongjin PEOPLE, we speak with Ryu Wanju, Senior Strategist of the WRMS Strategy Team, about how WRMS came to be, what makes it competitive on the world stage, and where it is headed next.

Part 1 Introducing WRMS
Q 01Please briefly introduce yourself and your current role.

I am Ryu Wanju, Senior Strategist at the WRMS Strategy Team within the WRMS Business Division. My work covers a wide range of functions related to the WRMS business, from design and communications to marketing and business management.

Q 02What problem was WRMS originally built to solve?

Most people have used a water purifier on a rental plan at some point. But very few stop to think about what it actually takes to run that rental behind the scenes.

Think about the mobile app a service coordinator uses in the field. The billing structure that calculates payments precisely across a 36-month contract. The constant stream of exceptions: relocations, reinstallations, product changes, bundled discounts. Rental is built on a far more complex operational structure than it appears from the outside.

There is a clear limit to how long that complexity can be managed through human effort alone. The question that became WRMS's starting point was: "Can we solve this structure through a system?"

Rental is built on a far more complex operational structure than it appears from the outside. WRMS was built to carry that complexity, so our customers do not have to.

Q 03How would you describe WRMS's role in a business context?

WRMS is an integrated operations system that connects all the core processes of a rental and subscription business on a single platform. Sales, billing, service, procurement, logistics, asset management, and commission tracking were previously managed in silos. WRMS brings all of them into one unified structure.

Rental may look similar to an instalment plan, but it is an entirely different business model. Because ownership and usage are separated, a system capable of managing that complexity in a stable, reliable way is not optional. It is essential. WRMS's role is to provide exactly that: a stable growth foundation.

Q 04How did WRMS come to be regarded as the domestic standard for rental management solutions?

The foundation of WRMS is Woongjin's rental business experience, accumulated over more than 30 years. What set it apart was not simply a list of features. It was the fact that the rental business structure itself was modelled into the system.

By reducing the data fragmentation and operational inefficiency that comes from running multiple disconnected systems, and by designing the entire business flow to be managed within a single structure, WRMS earned its place as the standard that domestic rental industry customers came to trust.

It was not simply a list of features. We modelled the rental business structure itself into the system, and that is what made it the standard.

Part 2 Why WRMS Works Globally
Q 05You introduced WRMS at CES 2026 and other international events. What reactions did you hear most often on the ground?

At CES, we had the opportunity to meet customers from a remarkable range of countries. What was striking was how consistent the questions were, regardless of where people came from.

"Can we keep using this as the business grows?" "Can we operate to the same standard across different countries?" "If the people change, will the system stay stable?"

At the core of every question was the same need: a system capable of handling a business that keeps getting more complex. WRMS was introduced as the platform built to answer exactly that, and it generated a great deal of genuine interest.

The country changed, but the questions were always the same. Every customer wanted a system that could keep up with a business that never stops growing in complexity.

Q 06Were there common priorities that global customers consistently responded to? What strengths does WRMS have against those criteria?

Three points generated the strongest responses from global customers.

Modular Architecture
Select and combine only the functions needed, allowing flexible adaptation to any country or industry environment.
Multi-Channel Adaptability
Supports diverse sales channels and business models across varied global markets.
Scalable Operations
From startups to large enterprises, adoptable at any stage of business growth.

Above all, the trust that resonated most strongly with global customers was the sense that WRMS was built by people who genuinely understand the rental business. WRMS is oriented around data-driven operations, with plans to further enhance efficiency through AI-powered analytics, prediction, and automation.

Part 3 What It Means to Work at WRMS
Q 07How would you describe the culture and working style of Team WRMS?

Within the WRMS Business Division, roles and responsibilities are clearly defined, but there are no invisible walls dividing the work. We are an organisation that asks "What needs to be solved right now?" before asking "Whose job is this?"

In the course of any project, decisions frequently arise at the intersection of design, development, and operations. Rather than drawing boundaries around job functions, WRMS brings people together around the core of the problem. There is a shared understanding that WRMS as a solution is only completed through the collaboration of the whole team.

This culture is reinforced through the WRMS Education System, a structure where individual knowledge and experience become organisational assets, and where every team member can be both instructor and learner. Challenges are not treated as problems to be managed, but as opportunities to learn.

Working at WRMS is less about executing an assigned role and more about an experience where individual capability expands alongside the organisation's growth.

I started as a designer, and over time I have taken part in communications, branding, business management, and organisational culture work. The structure where personal challenge and learning connect directly to the team's competitiveness is how I understand Team WRMS.

Part 4 The Future of WRMS
Q 08As a business solution, what direction is WRMS developing toward?

WRMS's goal is to become a global business standard platform, one that can stably support not just rental, but the full range of industries connected to human life cycles, including subscription, sharing, and the circular economy.

WRMS does not want to be a system chasing the latest technology. It wants to evolve into infrastructure that sustains the stable, long-term growth of businesses. The aim is to build a structure where WRMS expands as its customers grow. Three directions are being prepared for that.

1
Global Partner Ecosystem. Building partnerships with IT companies, cloud partners, and industry specialists in each country to enable fast local deployment and operations.
2
Data-Driven Operations. Strengthening AI analytics, prediction, and automation to support larger businesses with leaner teams and smarter decision-making at scale.
3
Industry Expansion. Evolving beyond any single industry into a platform that connects across diverse service sectors, including subscription, sharing, and the circular economy.
Q 09What role do you hope WRMS will play in the global market?

The goal is for "rental business = WRMS" to be a natural equation, not just in Korea, but in the United States, across Asia, and beyond.

WRMS is still evolving in the field every day. Grounded in an attitude of genuinely trying to understand the market, a culture of sharing knowledge with one another, and an organisation oriented toward growing together, WRMS will continue to expand into more industries, understand more diverse ways of operating, and evolve into a global platform that works smarter.

The goal is simple: for "rental business = WRMS" to be a natural equation, not just in Korea, but everywhere.

Woongjin Asia's Perspective Editorial
A · Factual
WRMS is an integrated rental and subscription management platform built on over 30 years of Woongjin's operational experience. It unifies sales, billing, service, logistics, asset management, and commission tracking on a single system and has been adopted as the standard by major domestic rental companies. Its modular architecture and scalable model are now being introduced to global markets, with CES 2026 marking a key milestone in that outreach.
B · Human
What Ryu Wanju's story makes clear is that WRMS is not a product built in isolation. It was shaped by people who asked hard operational questions and kept asking them. The WRMS Education System, the no-silos culture, the journey from designer to strategist: these are not incidental details. They are the reason the platform understands rental the way it does. The product reflects the team that built it.
C · Strategic
For companies in Southeast Asia evaluating rental or subscription management platforms, WRMS addresses a real gap: most enterprise systems were not designed with the rental model in mind. WRMS was. Its three strategic directions, covering a global partner ecosystem, AI-driven operations, and industry expansion, signal a platform that is not standing still. The question for regional businesses is not whether a purpose-built rental platform matters. It is which one to grow with.

WRMS is a solution designed with a full understanding of how rental businesses actually flow. Built on the structural foundation of Woongjin's decades of operational experience, it is now adding the flexibility and global reach to expand into new markets and industries.

Having proven its value as the standard for the domestic rental industry, WRMS is beginning its next challenge on the global stage, carrying the same depth of understanding that made it trusted at home.

Follow the WRMS journey as it continues to evolve. More stories from the people behind Woongjin IT are on the way.
