Woongjin Asia is leading Woongjin's global expansion by driving a wide range of IT businesses across Southeast Asia — from ERP and cloud to solutions and AI — with Malaysia as its regional hub. Leveraging the capabilities of its Korean headquarters, Woongjin Asia delivers services tailored to local markets while continuously enhancing its global collaboration framework.
Among its expanding initiatives, strengthening global development capabilities has become a key strategic focus. As more companies adopt the Global Development Center (GDC) model to secure IT development capacity at scale, Woongjin has responded by establishing its own GDC across Korea, the United States, and Malaysia. In this edition of Woongjin PEOPLE, we speak with Sangwoong Kim, Managing Director of Woongjin Asia, to explore what the GDC is, why it matters now, and what it means for customers.
Hello, I am Sangwoong Kim, Managing Director of Woongjin Asia.
I oversee the global expansion of Woongjin's IT business portfolio, including Solutions (WRMS, WDMS), ERP (SAP S/4HANA, SAP Business One), and Cloud (AWS, Microsoft Azure, NAVER Cloud). I am also responsible for expanding our IT business across Southeast Asia with Malaysia as the regional hub.
A GDC is not simply an overseas development team. It is a dedicated software development and IT operations hub that executes global IT projects based on standardized processes and professional expertise. In short, it is an execution organization that delivers the IT capabilities customers need at a global standard.
Woongjin's GDC operates across Korea, the United States, and Malaysia. As Woongjin's Southeast Asian hub, Woongjin Asia focuses on securing global IT talent, ensuring stable project delivery, optimizing costs, and establishing a 24-hour collaboration framework.
A GDC is not simply an overseas development team. It is an execution organization that delivers the IT capabilities customers need at a global standard.
Companies are increasingly exploring GDC models due to two key pressures: the difficulty of securing high-quality development talent, and the need to manage rising costs.
In many markets, labor costs for skilled developers continue to rise, making it harder to recruit and retain top talent. At the same time, as digital transformation accelerates, both system implementation and ongoing operational costs are steadily increasing. To build a sustainable cost structure while maintaining competitiveness, many organizations are turning to the GDC model.
Woongjin's GDC goes beyond simple development support. It functions as a global delivery organization that ensures stable execution of customer projects.
We place strong emphasis on applying the same quality standards and methodologies used by our headquarters to ensure consistent service delivery across all locations.
Woongjin's GDC operates under a One Team framework with headquarters and business units. A typical project process is as follows:
All projects are managed using shared collaboration tools and standardized processes. When necessary, we flexibly operate a hybrid onsite-offshore model.
To ensure seamless communication, Woongjin's GDC hires Malaysian professionals who studied in Korea and are fluent in both Korean and English, fostering them as developers and bridge engineers.
We also leverage real-time collaboration tools to maintain close communication across locations.
Malaysia has only a one-hour time difference from Korea, making real-time collaboration highly efficient. For U.S. projects, the time difference actually enhances productivity. Development requests made at end of day are often completed by the next morning.
Quality is one of the most frequently raised concerns — and one we take very seriously.
Woongjin's GDC applies the same standardized development methodologies as our headquarters to maintain consistent quality levels. We also actively utilize AI tools for AI-assisted coding, code reviews, and systematic testing to enhance quality management throughout the development lifecycle.
Additionally, we implement long-term retention strategies for key personnel to ensure continuity of expertise and institutional knowledge.
We apply the same quality standards and methodologies as our headquarters, and actively leverage AI tools for coding, code review, and testing to go even further.
Woongjin's GDC applies the same security standards as our headquarters and complies with all relevant regulations, including personal data protection laws and compliance requirements.
We can also adapt to specific customer security standards when necessary, ensuring flexible and secure operations tailored to each client's requirements.
Our ultimate goal is not simply cost reduction.
We aim to become a long-term strategic partner that customers can trust with confidence. By strengthening our AI development capabilities and continuously enhancing global standard processes, we intend to accelerate our customers' digital transformation in a practical and sustainable way.
Our goal is not simply cost reduction. We aim to become a long-term strategic partner that customers can trust — one that practically accelerates their digital transformation.
The global IT environment is evolving rapidly, and securing development capability has become a core element of business competitiveness.
A GDC is not merely about operating an overseas development center. It is about choosing the right partner to build a stable and reliable execution framework.
With close collaboration between our headquarters and global centers, a proven quality management system, and a stable global talent pool, Woongjin's GDC is committed to supporting our customers' successful projects from start to finish.
The question is not whether to use an overseas development center. It is about which partner you choose to build global competitiveness with.
