In May 2024, Google announced a USD 2 billion investment to develop data centre and cloud infrastructure in Malaysia. Microsoft also announced plans to invest USD 2.2 billion in Malaysia over four years, focusing on cloud and AI capabilities. These commitments reflect growing confidence in Malaysia as a reliable and strategic location for digital infrastructure.
The growth of the data centre industry is expected to create jobs and generate positive economic effects across Malaysia. At the same time, it also raises important questions around energy consumption and long-term sustainability.
Kenanga Investment Bank Research has estimated that the potential electricity demand of Malaysia's data centres could reach up to 5GW by 2035, equivalent to approximately one-fifth of Malaysia's current total power generation capacity.
In response to these concerns, global companies operating in Malaysia, including Microsoft, have been exploring more sustainable approaches to data centre operations while supporting local environmental initiatives and ecological restoration projects.

On 28 May 2024, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) at SEMICON Southeast Asia. The strategy is structured across three key phases.
Malaysia aims to modernise its existing outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) industry and attract both foreign direct investment (FDI) and domestic direct investment (DDI) to expand power semiconductor production.
Another key objective is to foster semiconductor design companies and strengthen Malaysia's overall industrial competitiveness.
